Larry began using papier mache' after learning the technique in Bible School. The original Teaser the Mouse and Miss Abigail Chicken were built as marionettes using papier mache'. By the time he was 17, he learned how to animate and use Celastic along with Dap Wood Doe finish and model lacquer paint to get the finish and appearance that fans are used to seeing in his puppets. Celastic is a fabric material that is impregnated with plastic. Dipping it into Acetone activates the plastic so that it becomes soft and pliable, behaving much like clay in a fabric form.
It usually took about one to two weeks to create and build puppets with this method. First he would make a sketch. Then he would sculpt the head, and sometimes body if it was a marionette, from modeling clay. Then a plaster mold would be made in which the Celastic would be placed and removed when dry. The Celastic was usually removed from the molds in two or three pieces. The pieces would be put together with additional squares of Celastic and the eyes, mouth, etc., would be cut and animated. The head was covered with Dap Wood Doe and sanded to a smooth glass-like finish. It was primed with white lacquer modeling paint and then painted the finishing colors with an airbrush. After that, the head was coated one last time with clear lacquer.
Although Larry learned how to use more adanced techniques while in Dayton, Ohio, he continued to use his original papier mache' versions through his time at WHIO-TV. The new Celastic versions were drastically different in quality and appearance and were not used regularly until Larry came to work on The Uncle Al Show in Cincinnati, Ohio. |
